Mahatma Gandhi short biography

Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948) was an Indian lawyer, pacifist, human rights activist and political as well as spiritual leader of the Indian independence movement, which in 1947 brought about the end of British colonial rule over India with his concept of non-violent resistance. His concept "Satyagraha" (clinging to the truth) included besides Ahimsa, non-violence, other ethical demands like "Swaraj", which means both individual and political self-control (self-rule). A yellowed black-and-white-photo.

served as a reference picture.

A quote from Mahatma Gandhi reads: "Nonviolence by no means means means rejection of any confrontation with evil. On the contrary, it is, in my opinion, a form of very active struggle - more genuine than the violent counter-attack, the essence of which is basically the increase of malice." As a political leader, Gandhi was well aware of his power, but he taught non-violent resistance without any ifs or buts. Many people worshipped him for this attitude and followed his example. In the Speedpainting the quote is: "There is no way to peace, peace is the way". Pure pacifism: a phrase that is more topical than ever in this day and age. For many leaders, especially in the Western world, still believe that peace can be enforced by armies and armed force. The well-known English version of this quote reads: "There is no way to peace; peace is the way."
