The portrait drawing of the current chess world champion Magnus Carlsen is drawn with pencils on paper (40 x 30 cm). The drawing process took about two hours. In the video, which I cut together as time-lapse, I explain step by step how I proceeded with the drawing. I also explain which tools I use for drawing and why I drew the motif on my head.
.In the picture section (below) you can also see in enlargement how I drew the eye, the mouth and the hair. This way you can see how important the distance between the observer and the drawing is: what looks like single pencil strokes from close up, becomes more and more a part of the overall picture impression with increasing distance.
From my point of view, this is an essential criterion for the quality of a realistic pencil drawing: the change of perception when looking at the picture. This is also possible because a pencil allows such a highly differentiated drawing. It is possible to differentiate considerably the range of effects of lines and surfaces, so that one can create drawings with a very individual and original expression, which can express an enormous calm and, in addition, a lot of tension.
